Taraclia, the centre of Moldova’s Bulgarian community, marked Bulgaria’s National Day and the 148th anniversary of the country’s Liberation on Tuesday with a rally and a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to Major Olimpiy Panov.

Among those attending were Taraclia District Chair Lazar Dermenzhi, Bulgarian Embassy Second Secretary in Chisinau Martin Vladimirov, and Hristo Hristov, Mayor of Varna’s Mladost district. Speakers paid tribute to the heroes of the Liberation War and called for preserving Bulgarian language and identity. Similar commemorations were held in Chisinau and other Bulgarian-populated localities in Moldova.

Later on Tuesday, Bulgarian MP Rositsa Kirova opened the 13th international freestyle wrestling tournament dedicated to the anniversary. Twenty-seven teams and around 260 children (born 2011-2017) from Moldova and Ukraine are competing in Taraclia.
