Membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will open up new opportunities for the implementation of Bulgaria’s economic policy, said Ivo Marinov, Director of the Directorate for Foreign Economic Policy and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Economy and Industry, during a public discussion in Sofia on Thursday.
The discussion focused on Bulgaria’s future OECD membership as a factor for investment and economic growth. It was organized by the Diplomatic Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to Marinov, Bulgaria’s decision to pursue OECD membership represents a forward-looking step toward building a modern and prosperous society, functioning within a stable market economy, under democratic governance, and participating equally with other member states in shaping international standards in key areas such as public administration, regulatory policy, education, healthcare, the digital economy, and innovation.
“OECD membership is not only a political and institutional choice, but also an economic guarantee of the future we all strive for,” he said.
Marinov noted that the Ministry of Economy and Industry has hosted several consecutive OECD missions and continues to work on implementing the organization’s recommendations, aiming to avoid policies and practices that could negatively affect the trade and investment environment.
He emphasized that the OECD’s assessments of national legislation, policies, and practices provide valuable guidance for overcoming challenges and achieving economic prosperity.
According to him, joining the OECD would send a strong signal to both international and domestic investors that the country is following best practices and is committed to improving its investment climate.
