President Rumen Radev is departing on a two-day visit to Germany, Radev’s Press Secretariat said.
As part of his visit to the Federal Republic of Geramy, Rumen Radev will take part on Wednesday in the official inauguration ceremony of a high-tech plant of the German defense company Rheinmetall in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, at the invitation of the company’s CEO Armin Papperger. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil will also attend the event.
On the second day of his visit, the Bulgarian President will meet with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Berlin.
The two heads of state last held a one-on-one meeting at the Berlin presidential residence in May 2022, while Steinmeier made an official visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of Rumen Radev in April 2019.
Diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Germany were established on July 8, 1879, and were severed on September 5, 1944, according to information from BTA’s Reference Department. The People’s Republic of Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with the German Democratic Republic (GDR) on October 17, 1949 (at embassy level as of July 11, 1954), and with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) on December 21, 1973. Following October 3, 1990 (the reunification of the two German states), the FRG embassy in Bulgaria assumed all functions, while the Bulgarian embassy in the GDR was converted into a Diplomatic Bureau with a consular service. By decision of the Council of Ministers of February 25, 1999, the Bulgarian Embassy was moved from Bonn to Berlin.
