A declaration of strategic partnership between Bulgaria and Japan, signed in Tokyo on Tuesday, was described by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev as an important step forward in the history of bilateral relations. “It is a logical result of the sincere friendship, respect and trust between our nations and our increasingly intensive sectoral cooperation,” Radev said at a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba after the signing of the declaration in the Prime Minister’s residence.

The guest went on to comment that the promotion of Bulgaria’s relations with Japan to the level of strategic partnership reflects the dynamism of the two countries’ economic and technological development, their shared fundamental values and their commitment to serving as factors of stability in their respective regions and working together to strengthen international peace and security.

This is evidenced by Bulgaria’s ongoing participation in Expo 2025 in Osaka, Radev said. He noted that the Bulgarian pavilion at the world exposition welcomes thousands of visitors every day. They “have a chance to get a glimpse at our rich culture, history and tradition and to learn more of Bulgaria’s achievements in high technology, artificial intelligence, information technology and space exploration as well as education and science.”

The Bulgarian President congratulated Japan on hosting and organizing Expo 2025, which, he said, exceeds all expectations and leads to the future.

Repeating an observation he made during a business forum earlier in the day, Radev said that, traditionally, Bulgaria is known in Japan mainly for its yogurt, its Rose Valley and its professional practitioners of the Japanese wrestling style of sumo, but nowadays, it offers various opportunities of shared interest in the high-tech sectors of the future.

The President noted that Bulgaria and Japan maintain a longstanding friendship and an effective partnership which continues to develop successfully in all areas, including the bilateral political dialogue and cooperation on the international scene, in the economy and science, education and culture.

Radev is on an official visit to Japan, leading a Bulgarian delegation which includes businesspeople. Japan’s Emperor Naruhito gave an audience for Radev on Monday. The two talked for half an hour at the Imperial Palace. On Tuesday, the President took part in a bilateral business forum involving about 150 Japanese companies operating in various fields.
