site.btaBulgaria Still Insists on Five Crossings on Danube River, Says Transport Minister

Bulgaria is still on the position that there should be five crossings on the Danube River, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov said during a meeting of the parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee here on Tuesday. He was asked by MP Martin Dimitrov of Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria whether he expected the policy on transport connectivity with Romania to change after the presidential elections there.
In Karadjov's words, the Danube has become a transport obstacle because of the Romanian side's long-standing policy of deterrence, of not allowing new bridge constructions across the Danube. "Under my leadership, we will strive for new Danube crossings," he said. Karadjov explained that Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania had agreed on a meeting in early June about easing the river traffic, but the Romanian side had subsequently turned down the invitation, possibly because of the elections.
In his words, Bulgaria wants to have its own passageways on the Danube. He is hopeful about a change in Romania's policy.
