Members of the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs voted on Tuesday evening in favour of appointing Andres Ritter (Germany) as the next European Chief Prosecutor.
In a statement, the European Parliament noted that Ritter had earlier received initial backing from both Parliament and the Council of the European Union. In Tuesday’s vote, he was supported by 52 votes in favour, 10 against and six abstentions. Following a final vote in March, Ritter is expected to take office in November.
At the end of 2025, Parliament held hearings with four candidates for the post. Ritter was appointed Deputy European Chief Prosecutor in November 2020 and previously held various positions within the German prosecution service, the European Parliament added.
The European Chief Prosecutor is appointed by common accord between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.
The current European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Kovesi, was appointed in October 2019. Her seven-year term is not renewable and runs until October 31.
