Bulgaria's Education and Science Minister Krasimir Valchev has taken part in a high-level summit on artificial intelligence (AI) in Bratislava, Slovakia, which brought together ministerial delegations from over 40 countries and representatives from the European Commission, the UN, UNESCO, and other international institutions. The event was hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Government of Slovakia, the Education and Science Ministry's press centre said on Monday.
Valchev participated in a roundtable discussion focused on future competencies in the AI era. He presented Bulgaria’s policies on digital transformation, the integration of AI tools into the learning process, and support for teachers. "To prepare students for the future, we need to teach them to learn about AI, with AI, and beyond AI. That is, to preserve the human element and be able to do without it as well. Fundamental knowledge and skills will remain very important, but we also need a mechanism for flexible revision of curricula in the future, since technologies are changing faster than the processes in public systems," the Minister said.
The discussion addressed topics such as adapting curricula to technological change, transforming the role of teachers, and preparing young people for the economy of the future.
The OECD is preparing a guidance document for countries on implementing AI in education systems, which is expected to be officially released in early 2026. It was also announced at the forum that the next international PISA study in 2029 will include a module to measure AI-related skills.
Participating in the forum were Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, European Commissioner for Social Rights and Skills, Quality Jobs, and Preparedness Roxana Minzatu, and OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, among others.
