Electricity was produced from food waste collected from households in Burgas in the city's new anaerobic installation, Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said on Thursday on his official Facebook page.

"I thank all my fellow citizens who separately dispose of food waste in brown bins next to the containers," he noted. The anaerobic installation in Burgas is the first in Bulgaria to operate on the principle of dry methanization and has a capacity to process over 30,000 tons of waste per year. It includes eight bioreactors, a biogas system, a gas storage facility, six composting tunnels and a top-class cogeneration system for combined production of electricity and heat.

The installation is equipped with modern fermentation management systems, monitoring and process control. The decomposition of waste is carried out in the complete absence of oxygen, with the help of special bacteria, which leads to the production of high-quality compost and methane.
