Unit 6 of Kozloduy NPP was shut down Thursday for planned maintenance works related to a leak of a heat carrier in the third steam generator, the plant's press centre confirmed to BTA. The decision to shut down the unit was taken to ensure its necessary high safety and reliable electricity supply during the summer period, the plant said in a statement on its website.

Constant monitoring shows that the recorded values are many times and in many cases lower than the values specified in the technological regulation. The limits stipulated in the safe operation norms have not been reached and there has been no change in the radiation situation in the working premises and on the Kozloduy NPP site.

According to data from the website of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the gamma background in Bulgaria for the last 24 hours is within the natural variations of this indicator typical for the regions concerned. For the territory of Bulgaria, the natural gamma background is within the range of 0.06 to 0.40 µSv/h. In Kozloduy, a radiation gamma background of 0,13 µSv/h has been measured.

Unit 6 was shut down for planned preventive maintenance in December 2022 and in April 2023. In the summer of 2024, the unit was shut down for planned preventive maintenance related to faults found in the process of operation of the oil system of the 24/400kV unit transformer (the non-nuclear part of the unit), as well as due to indications of heat carrier leakage in the steam generator.
