The number of banknotes in circulation in Bulgaria has fallen to its lowest level in two years, according to Bulgarian National Bank data. Banknotes in circulation amounted to 569.5 million pieces at the end of June 2025. The last time, fewer banknotes in circulation were recorded at the end of the first half of 2023, when they reached 568.01 million pieces.

The peak in the number of cash notes circulating was recorded at the end of 2024 when they stood at 611.06 million. Since the beginning of the year, the number of banknotes decreased by 41.5 million pieces or by 6.8%.

On a monthly basis, the decline reached nearly 3% or a drop of 17.1 million bills. By comparison, there were 586.7 million banknotes in circulation at the end of May. On a monthly basis, there was a decrease in the number of all denominations except for the five-lev bill.

The most numerous denominations remain 50 leva and 100 leva - 232.4 million and 144 million pieces, respectively. The two banknotes with the highest denominations account for 66% of the total number of banknotes in circulation.

The total value of banknotes in circulation in Bulgaria amounted to BGN 28.6 billion at the end of June, BNB data shows.

The total number of currency coins in circulation in the country reached 3.37 billion pieces at the end of June, with their total value amounting to BGN 632.9 million. Compared to the end of 2024, the coins increased by 40 million pieces and the value recorded an increase of BGN 8.38 million.
