Speaking at the “Bulgarian crafts - traditions meet the future" international conference here on Tuesday, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Lozana Vassileva said that the new registration regime for geographical indications for craft and industrial products will help preserve and develop cultural heritage in the sector. "I welcome the united efforts of the institutions to ensure the implementation of a working mechanism to support the Bulgarian economy through the promotion of European quality schemes and the protection of intellectual property rights of products with geographical indications," Vassileva said.

Vassileva recalled that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food acts as the competent authority for European quality schemes, and pointed out that thanks to the joint efforts of the administration and Bulgarian farmers, a number of emblematic native products have legal protection in the European Union. Currently, four protected designations of origin are registered in the EU register of geographical indications - Strandzanski manov honey, Bulgarian yoghurt, Bulgarian white brined cheese and Strandzanski herbal tea. Bulgaria also has two protected geographical indications for Gornooryahovski sudzhuk, and Bulgarian rose oil, as well as seven foodstuffs with traditional specific character, the Deputy Minister recalled.

She stressed that within the Strategic Plan for Agricultural Development, there is also possible intervention to promote and support quality schemes, which also includes funds for information and promotion activities. The Ministry also supports the preservation and introduction of handicrafts.

The forum was organised by the Bulgarian Patent Office together with the European Commission and the European Union Intellectual Property Office.
