To dispel fear and resistance to the euro, people must understand that Bulgaria’s membership in the eurozone is proof to the world that it is a strong economy with a rightful place at the table of the strong, said Bulgarian EU Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva in a video address on Tuesday. Her remarks came during a discussion on financial literacy as a factor for investment, income, and the euro area, held at the Council of Ministers building in Sofia. The event, organized by the Economic and Social Council of the Republic of Bulgaria, was opened by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov.

"To dispel fear and resistance to the euro, people need to hear every day why it is a good thing, and to practically understand what it means for Bulgaria to be part of the eurozone,” Zaharieva said. According to her, the public must be reminded that the euro brings economic stability, lower costs for international payments, and a simpler way of life while travelling.

"[The public must be reminded] that our country becomes more attractive for investment, that the euro is proof to the world that we are a stable and strong economy worth investing in. That the euro is a chance for more business, higher productivity, more jobs, and, ultimately, a better life for everyone. That the euro is a symbol of trust in our country and proof of a strong economy – proof that Bulgaria has a seat at the table of the strong," Zaharieva stressed.

She noted that the European Commission, together with member states, is working on a special strategy that includes measures to boost financial literacy, since a modern, competitive economy requires investment in modern education, access to quality information, and innovative and entrepreneurial thinking.

"Financial literacy is the best antidote to populism, and to political and economic manipulation,” Zaharieva added.
