The White Lagoon beach in Kavarna Municipality (Northeastern Bulgaria) is a long-standing winner of the prestigious Blue Flag. This is the ninth consecutive year that the beach has received the international environmental award. The beach strip of the White Lagoon extends over nearly 9,000 square metres. The entire Ikantalaka area, of which the beach is a part, is located in a naturally formed bay between Balchik and Kavarna. It is located 5 km from the municipal centre Kavarna, 60 km from Varna, 47 km from Dobrich and 12 km from Balchik. The beachfront is quite narrow, surrounded by high white cliffs rising above the sea. With fine golden sand and clear azure waters, the beach is stunning. The beach offers a serene and relaxing atmosphere.

This naturally formed bay is typical of the rugged, indented coastline along the Northern Black Sea. Various bird species nest in the vicinity of the beach, in the forests, hilly areas and rocks.

The White Lagoon beach was first awarded the Blue Flag in 2017. "We work with major tour operators on the German and Romanian markets, who likely highlight our recognition for environmental cleanliness when promoting our destination," Antoni Petkov, front-office manager of the White Lagoon Hotel, told BTA. He said the hotel opened on May 22 and is seeing an increase in tourist numbers.

The manager said that last year tourist visits reached the 2019 levels, and that an increase in German, Scandinavian, Czech and Romanian tourists is expected this year.

The Blue Flag Award is given by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education, with over 50 countries participating in the programme. In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained.

BTA is presenting all 30 Bulgarian beaches and harbours awarded the Blue Flag by the international jury of the Programme in Copenhagen. It is the 30th anniversary of the first award for the country - the pilot Blue Flag was raised on Sunny Beach on July 4, 1995.
