Bulgaria has started the procedure to create the largest energy storage battery in the country, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said Wednesday during the opening of the fifth edition of RE-Source Southeast 2025 in Sofia. He specified that the battery will be part of the projects under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

Before the start of the forum, the Minister said that the first energy storage battery with a capacity of nearly 500 megawatt-hours will be unveiled Thursday in Lovech (North Central Bulgaria).

Combined with the Chaira Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Plant, this powerful energy storage system will ensure the stability of the energy grid, allowing energy produced during hours with negative prices to be used during peak periods, when energy is more expensive and in higher demand, Stankov said. "My ambition is to have nearly 10,000 megawatt-hours of batteries installed across the country by the end of next year," he added.

The Minister also reported that work continues on three new pumped-storage stations in the Rhodope Mountains, which will provide capacity for much larger volumes of energy storage.
