End-February Gross External Debt Increases by 9.7% Y/Y to EUR 48 Bln

Аt end-February 2025, Bulgaria’s gross external debt amounted to EUR 47,856.6 million (43.8% of GDP), growing by EUR 4,216.3 million (9.7%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 43,640.3 million, 42.1% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank (the country’s central bank) reported on Tuesday.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 8,558.3 million (17.9% of the total debt, 7.8% of GDP), growing by EUR 1,131.9 million (15.2%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 7,426.3 million, 17% of the total debt, 7.2% of GDP). Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 39,298.3 million (82.1% of the total debt, 36% of GDP), growing by EUR 3,084.4 million (8.5%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 36,214 million, 83% of the total debt, 34.9% of GDP).

Gross external liabilities with remaining maturity over one year totalled EUR 29,952.8 million (62.6%).

Also at end-February 2025, general government’s gross external debt amounted to EUR 12,918.9 million (11.8% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,070.5 million (19.1%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 10,848.3 million, 10.5% of GDP).

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,947.4 million (1.8% of GDP), increasing by EUR 29.6 million (1.5%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 1,917.8 million, 1.8% of GDP). The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions were EUR 7,291.7 million (6.7% of GDP), growing by EUR 1,088 million (17.5%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 6,203.8 million, 6% of GDP).

Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 12,692.4 million (11.6% of GDP), increasing by EUR 655.8 million (5.4%) from end-February 2024 (EUR 12,036.7 million, 11.6% of GDP).
