site.btaFood Prices Edge Up in Past Week

The prices of most staple foods, fruit and vegetables went up in the past week, according to the latest data from the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.

The market index for wholesale food prices in Bulgaria declined by 0.45% to 2.407 points over the outgoing week. Last week, the index stood at 2.418 points. The base level of 1 point was set in 2005.

Compared with last week, brine cheese, eggs, cooking oil and butter depreciated.

The price of poultry rose by 0.8% to BGN 6.75/kg. White brined cheese from cow's milk appreciated by 0.9% to BGN 11.44 per kilogramme, while yellow kashkaval cheese of the Vitosha type went up by 0.3% to BGN 18.47/kg.

The price of yogurt (with a fat content of 3% and over) went down by 0.4% to BGN 1.40 for 400 grammes, that of milk (with a fat content of 3%) went up 0.1% to BGN 2.40 per litre. Butter from cow's milk depreciated by 1.2% to BGN 3.13 per 125 grammes.

The wholesale price of eggs (size M) was BGN 0.35 per unit, down by 4.8%

The price of rice went up by 0.6% to BGN 3.35/kg. Lentils rose by 1.3% to BGN 4.50/kg. Beans depreciated by 0.1% to BGN 4.42/kg. The price of flour (type 500) increased by 1% to BGN 1.48/kg. Sunflower oil also depreciated, by 0.8% to BGN 3.21/litre, while sugar appreciated by 1.3% to BGN 1.81/kg.

An increase in the price of all fruits and vegetables, excluding apples, potatoes and green peppers, was observed on the wholesale markets during this week

Among vegetables, lettuce saw the largest price rise, increasing by 21.4% to BGN 1.05 per unit.

The price of cabbage rose by 8.3% to BGN 1.75/kg, of onions by 6.8% to BGN 1.29/kg and that of carrots by 5.1% to BGN 1.29/kg. Potatoes depreciated by 0.5% to BGN 1.37/kg, while new potatoes appreciated by 4.1% to BGN 4.10/kg.

Tomatoes rose by 4.3% to BGN 3,08/kg, cucumbers by 2.8% to BGN 2.96/kg, radishes by 1.2% to BGN 1.06 per unit, green peppers by 2.9% to BGN 5.58/kg.

The price of oranges increased by 1.1% to BGN 2.23/kg, that of lemons rose by 0.9% to BGN 2.74/kg. Apples depreciated by 1.3% to BGN 1.86/kg. Bananas rose by 1.7% to BGN 2.91/kg.
