Bulgaria's minimum wage for the next calendar year will be set by September 1 of the current year at 50% of the average gross wage for a period of 12 months, which includes the last two quarters of 2022 and the first two quarters of 2023, MPs decided Wednesday with amendments to the Labour Code adopted on second reading. 159 MPs voted in favour of the amendments, none against and 44 abstained.

According to the adopted texts, the minimum wage cannot be lower than the amount set for the previous year. MPs rejected a proposal by the left, formulated as an editorial amendment, for the law to enter into force on July 1, 2023. Yordan Tsonev, who chaired the session, noted that with the rejection of this proposal, the mechanism for determining the minimum wage would come into force at the beginning of next year.
