A temporary change in the processing and notification of bank card payments in Sofia’s public transport will be introduced from December 31, 2025, to January 2, 2026, the Sofia Urban Mobility Centre announced on Tuesday.

The Centre stated that for journeys made after 4:00 a.m. on December 31, the payment notification (SMS, push notification, etc.) may be delayed and received on January 1. Trips taken on December 31 and January 1 will be processed and charged to bank cards on January 2.

The change is temporary and is related to technical procedures associated with the transition to the new currency, the Urban Mobility Centre said.

Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro as of January 1, 2026, requires system adjustments by commercial banks in the country. As a result, some banking services will be temporarily unavailable in the final days of 2025 and the first days of the new year, according to information published on the official websites of the financial institutions. Account balances will be automatically converted from Bulgarian levs to euros, while IBANs will remain unchanged, meaning no prior preparation or action is required from customers.

The main technical interruption affecting customers of all banks is scheduled to take place between 9:00 p.m. on December 31 and 1:00 a.m. on January 1.
