The local authorities of Shumen in Bulgaria and Ayvalik in Turkiye discussed opportunities for economic and cultural cooperation during a meeting in Shumen, the municipal government reported on Sunday. The delegation from Ayvalik (Balikesir Province, Northwestern Turkiye) was led by Mayor Mesut Ergin.

Shumen Mayor Hristo Ivanov told the guests that the main strength of his town is that it outpaces even some larger Bulgarian urban centres in terms of economic growth. Major corporations, including entities from Turkiye, run very successful businesses in Shumen, Ivanov said. "We maintain excellent relations," he added.

The host noted that there is an industrial park in the area, whose ownership is split 40/60 between the Municipality and a private investor. "The successful development of public-private partnership has brought many companies to our town, which has a positive effect on the municipal and regional economy," Ivanov said. He highlighted the fact that Shumen, a place of remarkable history, cultural monuments and natural landmarks, has seen a 12% surge in tourism over the last two years.

Shumen maintains close contacts with other Turkish towns as well, the municipal press release said.

Mayor Mesut Ergin pointed out that Ayvalik is known for its olive oil production and food festivals inspired by a rich local cuisine. It is a three-hour drive from Istanbul, which makes it a much-visited place. The area boasts many business investments in bridges and other infrastructure, Ergin said.

Ayvalik has begun to build a new industrial zone which will specialize in the food industry, Ergin said. According to Ivanov, building a similar facility for the food sector is on the agenda of the local government in Shumen.

The two mayors agreed on bilateral contacts in the field of culture.

Shumen and Ayvalik are of similar size in terms of population: 67,000 and 75,000, respectively, according to estimates from 2024.
