The Council of Ministers has adopted a decision proposing that the National Assembly approve an investment project titled “Acquisition of New Three-Dimensional Radars”, the government said in a press release on Wednesday.
The objective of the project is to build, develop, and maintain the capabilities of Bulgaria’s Airspace Surveillance System within the country’s area of responsibility, in line with NATO’s conceptual and standardization documents. To address the shortfall in ground-based active radar surveillance capabilities, the project envisions the acquisition of seven new three-dimensional radars along with the necessary auxiliary equipment to ensure effective, continuous, and reliable monitoring and control of the airspace, supporting the enforcement of Bulgaria’s air sovereignty and the fulfilment of allied commitments within NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence system.
The project is based on a draft acquisition contract resulting from an Acquisition Order under the Framework Agreement between the Bulgarian Defence Ministry and the Ministry of the Armed Forces of France, and on a draft supplementary side contract between the Bulgarian MoD and the radar manufacturer.
The project includes the delivery, installation, and integration of equipment and services under the acquisition order, as well as auxiliary equipment, services, and activities related to the operation of the radars under the side contract with the manufacturer.
