site.btaLIK Editor-in-Chief: To Make People Laugh Is to Inspire Them with Freedom

LIK Editor-in-Chief Georgi Lozanov said that "to make people laugh is to inspire them with freedom". He joined on Zoom the presentation of the September issue of the magazine dedicated to the 100th anniversaries of iconic Bulgarian actors Georgi Partsalev (1925-1989) and Georgi Kaloyanchev (1925-2012).
The LIK issue, titled "The Kings of Laughter at 100", was presented in Varna on Saturday during the Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival.
Lozanov noted that cinema allows contemporary audiences to experience the talent of these actors, even as theatre audiences who saw them live are gradually shrinking. He said the magazine helps bridge generations, preserving cultural memory so that future audiences can enjoy and even laugh at what previous generations laughed at, creating a sense of continuity and unity in national culture.
The editor highlighted that the September issue also reflects LIK's editorial approach to evaluating Bulgaria's recent past, showing how Partsalev and Kaloyanchev became celebrated figures during the communist era. He emphasized the importance of understanding history in a nuanced way, recognizing both its achievements and its lessons, with the actors representing the positive aspects of that society.
Lozanov described laughter as a form of liberation: it frees the individual from the object of their mockery, creating a physical and emotional sense of freedom. "A laughing person is completely lost to the powers that be," he said, adding that the "L" in laughter is tied to the "L" in liberty.
He also compared the two actors' personalities and careers: Kaloyanchev quickly became a beloved national figure, adapting to social circumstances, while Partsalev remained sceptical of society and was unwilling to conform to the rules of a totalitarian world, which gave him few chances to develop at the start. Despite their differences, Lozanov concluded, they shared one key trait: the talent to make people laugh.
