Zhivko "Gissen" Tenev has been selected to participate in the Fourth International Cartoon Contest Diogenes of Sinope in Turkiye. This year’s theme is "Environment," the artist’s team said.
The event focuses on the environmental threat posed by the construction of a nuclear power plant in Sinop. An area the size of 220,000 football fields in the Boyabat district has been designated for copper mining exploration. According to Gissen’s team, this could lead to the felling of tens of thousands of trees, the loss of endemic plant species, water pollution, and risks to human health.
Participating artists were invited to use their projects to raise public awareness of an ecological ban that helps keep the natural environment livable, as well as to contribute to the cause with creative works, the press release said. The event is organized by the Municipality of Sinop and the Sinop Writers, Poets and Artists Association.
Zhivko "Gissen" Tenev has been an editorial artist at the news site Antenna Air since its founding 20 years ago. Previously, he published his cartoons in the newspapers Anteni, Pulse, Shipka and Demokratsia, among others. Gissen has been involved in cartooning, graphic design, painting, graphics, posters, murals, and performance art. He has won awards for his works at international exhibitions in Italy, Syria, China, and South Korea.
