A traveling photo exhibition entitled Selected from the 12th International Photo Salon Plovdiv opened at the Museum of Photography in Kazanlak on International Photography Day Tuesday.

The exhibition brings together over 80 of the best works from the photo salon, which were reviewed and evaluated by a five-member jury of three foreigners and two Bulgarians, with Freddie Van Gilbergen, Honorary Vice-President of the International Federation of Photographic Art, acting as chair of the jury. The jury reviewed a total of 4952 photographs, choosing a final selection of 1265 photographs by 282 participants from 42 countries.

The selected works for the exhibition were presented to the guests by its organizers Anton Savov and Lyubka Savova. They thanked the Museum of Photography in Kazanlak for hosting the event and presented awards to photographers from Kazanlak, Ruse and Stara Zagora during the official opening of the exhibition.

The works are divided into six categories with different focuses, which are also presented in the current exhibition, Savov pointed out. He noted that sections for classic black and white photography, color photography, as well as the categories Nature and Photojournalism are included, in which no manipulations and creative interventions of the raw footage are allowed. There are also photographs in the Portrait and Body and The World in Focus sections.

The salon was created thanks to the Academy of Photography Bulgaria - Yanka Kyurkchieva, established 26 years ago, Savov said, pointing out that Kyurkchieva had the vision and outlook that in order to develop adequately, Bulgarian photography must open up to the world. He noted that this is why in 2004 Kyurkchieva also restored the country's membership in the International Federation of Photographic Art.

"Without the Academy of Photography Bulgaria - Yanka Kyurkchieva, such competitions in our country would not be possible, and the international recognition for domestic photographers would not be the same as if we did not have a national representation in the international federation," Savov said, adding that today there are several international photography competitions in Bulgaria.

A catalogue is financed by Plovdiv Municipality and published for each edition of the competition, which is given to all participants. Over 72 Bulgarian authors are included in the final selection with 209 photographs, with their works to reach countries all over the world through the printed album. Savov pointed out that these catalogues preserve the creativity for generations, and the fact that each participant receives a catalogue means that Plovdiv and Bulgaria reach the whole world. He expressed gratitude to the participants and emphasized that without the artists, there could be no art, competitions and museum institutions.

The exhibition from the International Photo Salon Plovdiv 2025 will remain in Kazanlak until September 13, after which it will be shown in other cities in Bulgaria.

The 12th International Photo Salon Plovdiv is held under the auspices of the International Federation of Photographic Art, the Hellenic Photographic Society, the National Society of Bulgarian Photographers, with the support of Plovdiv Municipality.
