Two African moon moths have hatched at the Regional Museum of Natural History in Plovdiv, the museum management said on July 24. According to them, it was a rare and exceptionally beautiful natural event.
The African moon moth (Argema mimosae) is among the most striking representatives of nocturnal moths. It is known for its large wings with long tail-like extensions, giving it a mystical and otherworldly appearance. Native to the tropical regions of Africa, these moths live for only a few days—a time during which they do not feed, focusing solely on reproduction.
“This is a remarkable event for the museum and a wonderful opportunity for our visitors to get an up-close look at one of the most beautiful butterfly species,” the museum team commented.
The moths will be on display over the next few days in the “Tropic Hall,” which recreates the atmosphere of a tropical greenhouse with live plants, humidity, and temperature conditions close to their natural habitat, the press release added.
