Bulgarian actor Ivan Barnev received a standing ovation at the presentation of the film Vasil in Ankara. The Spanish-Bulgarian film starring the actor was screened in the garden of the JW Marriott Hotel. The event was organized by the Embassies of Bulgaria and Spain in Ankara.

Among the audience was the Bulgarian Ambassador to Turkiye Angel Cholakov, diplomats from the Spanish Embassy, cultural figures, students and lecturers from Ankara University.

The film immersed the audience in the story of two men - a widower and a Bulgarian immigrant, whose lives intertwine in an unexpected way. Ivan Barnev, as Vasil, impressed the audience with his deeply emotional yet restrained performance. The audience reacted with enthusiasm, and applause followed at the end of the screening.

In a conversation with the audience after the screening, Barnev talked about the history of the film, the collaboration with the Spanish team and the messages the film sends to the viewer. He also answered a number of questions from the audience.

"The film Vasil is a story about humanity. It touches on many facets of man that make him not only think but also love his fellow man," said Barnev. He said it is a film full of invisible walls and friendships that touch the heart. The actor also said it is a story about encounters that change us even when we do not expect them.

The actor identified learning the lines in Spanish as a challenge. “The most important thing for me, however, remains my friendship with my fellow actors and in particular with director Avelina Prat and my partner in the film, Karra Elejalde,” said Barnev.

The film was made with the support of the National Film Centre and Creative Europe Desk in Bulgaria.

Kamen Balkanski, Director of Creative Europe Desk in Bulgaria, was also a guest at the special summer cinema evening. “Rare are the contemporary Bulgarian films, such as Vasil, which are loved and stay on the screen for so long. I hope the film will be received by the Turkish audience with joy and affection as it offers joy and affection," Balkanski said.

Some viewers received the film emotionally. “The film made me very emotional,” Nur Ataman said.

Mr. Yit said he was also very moved by the story of the friendship between Vasil and Alfredo.

Students from the Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature at Ankara University's Faculty of Languages, History and Geography also attended the screening and translated the subtitles. They told BTA that the work of translating the subtitles was not easy; it took about two weeks.
