More than 90 artists are participating in the final exhibition of the “Clay Magic – Traditions in Bulgarian Ceramics” project in Sofia. The exhibition is on view at Art Gallery 158 until June 15, the organizers announced.
It showcases over 250 works created by more than 90 ceramicists inspired by the ceramic traditions of Troyan, Veliko Tarnovo, and Busintsi, the project team said.
According to them, the exhibition is the culmination of an educational and creative initiative led by Marta Dimitrova – artist and researcher, recognized as a contemporary guardian of Bulgaria’s ceramic heritage.
The project took place from February to April 2025, with the support of the National Culture Fund, and involved three cities: Sofia, Blagoevgrad, and Lovech. Participants had the opportunity to explore key techniques in traditional Bulgarian ceramics, including sgraffito and relief decoration.
“Ceramics is not just a craft, but a cultural code and a language through which we can speak about identity, history, and the future,” said Marta Dimitrova.
“In my work, tradition is not preserved in silence - it is reinterpreted, narrated, and passed on.”
According to her, “Clay Magic” is a dialogue between generations and cultural layers. The project brings together past and present into a unified whole, where clay becomes a vessel of memory, knowledge, and shared creativity, she said.
