The head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Daniil, has expressed his condolences following the passing of Pope Francis. In a message to the Apostolic Nuncio in Bulgaria, Archbishop Luciano Suriani, Patriarch Daniil called the Pope’s death a significant loss for millions of Christians around the world.
The condolence message was shared on the website of the Sofia Metropolitanate. Patriarch Daniil acknowledged the sorrow of the Pope’s passing, especially during the Bright Week of Easter, which this year is being celebrated at the same time by Christians worldwide.
Despite the sadness, the Patriarch highlighted the Christian belief in the resurrection and eternal life. He referred to Pope Francis’s final book, titled “Hope,” and said this hope reflects the Pope’s faith in life after death through Jesus Christ.
“Let us pray for the soul of Pope Francis and ask God to forgive all his sins,” Patriarch Daniil said.
Earlier on Monday, the Bulgarian Patriarch expressed condolences on the passing of Pope Francis to the entire Roman Catholic Church on the air of Nova TV on Monday.
“We will all pray for a successful election of a successor to Pope Francis,” he added. Patriarch Daniil added that in recent months God performed a miracle, because despite the grave condition of Pope Francis, he has raised him to his feet.
The Vatican confirmed the Pope’s death earlier on Monday. Pope Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio, died at the age of 88 after being hospitalized in Rome with severe pneumonia earlier this year.
