The Museum of the Revival in Varna will mark the national holiday on March 3 with an exhibition dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the proclamation of Alexander Battenberg as Prince of Bulgaria, Mariyana Nikolova, chief curator of the museum, said on Thursday. The exhibition will show relics related to his proclamation as a Bulgarian ruler.

The exhibition will also include three trays that the young prince received as a gift from the residents of Ruse, Lovech and Berkovitsa in the first months of his reign. For decades, the valuable trays were considered lost, Nikolova noted. They were discovered in January 2019, when they were put up for auction in Vienna. The Bulgarian state purchased them and handed them over to the National History Museum in Sofia, where they have become part of the permanent exhibition.

The Museum in Varna will also present photographs in which visitors can see members of Battenberg's family and people from his close circle from the time of his rule, Nikolova said.

Alexander Joseph von Battenberg was elected Prince of Bulgaria on April 17, 1879, Nikolova recalled. On June 24, 1879, he arrived in Varna on the steamship Konstantin and was welcomed by the local population and officials. A solemn arch was erected in his honour with the inscription "Go for it, Prince! The people are with you ["Derzai, Knyazhe! Narodat e s tebe!"]."

The exhibition will be on display until March 30.
