“I highly appreciate the efforts of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), which through the organization of this meeting is working to preserve and expand contacts with Bulgarian communities abroad, and through which also supports our activities,” said caretaker Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov to the participants in the 18th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Kazanlak on Friday.

He thanked for the wonderful cooperation the Foreign Ministry has with the BTA. “I am honoured to join you for this now regular forum, which over the years has established itself as a centre for spiritual unity and consistent interaction with our compatriots outside the borders of the homeland,” Kondov said.

The Foreign Minister stressed that the role of Bulgarian media outside the country is of key importance. “You not only work to build a positive image of Bulgaria, but you are also one of the authentic links to the homeland. You have the opportunity to be the link, but also to support a possible return process of some of our compatriots,” he said.

This year's theme of the Media and Freedom Forum is not only very important and timely, but also a permanent element of the work of the media in democratic societies, Kondov added. He pointed out that freedom of the media, freedom of expression are among the most valuable consequences of the norms of democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms.

As a signatory to the core conventions of the UN on human rights, the Council of Europe, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Bulgaria is committed to upholding the highest standards for the protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including with regard to media freedom, the Foreign Minister stated. He stressed that all of this is sought for the right of the audiences to be conscientiously informed and guided in the right direction so that they can freely form their own opinions. “When this is a fact, a society is formed, which can hardly be misled or susceptible to fake news, to malign influence, to manipulation,” Kondov said.

BTA is organizing the 18th World Meeting of the Bulgarian Media in Kazanlak on June 1-4 2023 with the assistance of Kazanlak Municipality, National Endowment Fund “13 Centuries Bulgaria” , Aurubis Bulgaria, POC Doverie, Postbank, A1 and Nestle Bulgaria.
