Thousands of Bulgarians in Chicago took part in the Parade of Bulgaria on the occasion of May 24, Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture, and of Slav Letters, said Bulgarian Consul General in Chicago Svetoslav Stankov on his Facebook page.

Among the official guests of the event was Elk Grove Village (Illinois) Mayor Craig Johnson and Tammy Miller, a member of the Town Board. During the celebration, Mayor Johnson announced May 24 as Bulgaria Day.

All thirteen Bulgarian Sunday schools in Chicago, folklore ensembles, cultural centres and patriotic organizations took part in the parade.

Among the special guests were violinist Svet Radoslavov and singer Maria Ilieva.

"Bulgarians in Chicago set an example to their compatriots around the world that they can stand united behind the holy cause, protect their alphabet, language, culture and traditions, as an expression of their Bulgarian identity," Svetoslav Stankov wrote on Facebook.
