Writer Georgi Gospodinov, whose latest novel, Time Shelter, has been shortlisted for the 2023 International Booker Prize, will meet Bulgarians at Oxford's legendary Blackwell's bookshop on May 22. He will visit the English town for the International Book Festival.

A few days ago, St Clare's, Oxford, posted on Facebook a photo of Bulgarian students reading books by Gospodinov, one of the authors they study.

Time Shelter, translated into English by Angela Rodel, is the first ever Booker nomination of a Bulgarian book, writer and translator.

The dystopian novel explores the weaponization of nostalgia. It is about the opening of a "clinic of the past" that offers a promising treatment for Alzheimer's sufferers.

The Times of London called it "a warning to Europe and Putin".

The winner of the 2023 International Booker Prize will be announced on May 23.

The winners' prize purse is GBP 50,000 equally divided between the author and the translator (or divided equally between multiple translators). There is a prize of GBP 5,000 for each of the shortlisted titles: GBP 2,500 for the author and GBP 2,500 for the translator (or divided equally between multiple translators).

The novel is a Guardian and Financial Times Book of the Year, and The New Yorker magazine listed it among the best books of 2022.

This is the writer's third novel, after the award-winning Natural Novel (1999, translated into more than 20 languages) and The Physics of Sorrow (2011).

So far, Time Shelter has been published in 17 languages, including German, Polish, Dutch, Croatian, Turkish, Swedish, Chinese and Arabic.
