The 5th edition of the only garlic feast in Bulgaria, the one in the northeastern village of Probuda, will be held on September 11, BTA has learned from Aneta Kircheva, secretary of the Rodina 1927 community centre in the village. The events within the feast, aimed at popularizing Bulgarian garlic, will be held in the centre’s courtyard.

This year’s edition of the feast will include a culinary competition for dishes containing garlic. A professional jury will evaluate the tasty creations of community centres, pensioners’ clubs, schools and other organizations. The winners will receive a diploma and an award.

The programme also features music performances by local amateur artists, a farmers' market where the local garlic growers will be able to sell their produce, and games for children.

The residents of Probuda have preserved a special garlic variety, which has been grown here for nearly 40 years, Kircheva told BTA. Unfortunately, each year the number of garlic growers in the village shrinks, and in 2022 it stands at only eight, she added.
