Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Kaloyan Pargov, has voiced opposition to the proposed closure of the Counter-Corruption Commission, arguing that the most urgent issue facing the country right now is the State’s finances.

Speaking on Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Sunday, Pargov emphasized that while dissolving the Commission may not bring down the Government, it could jeopardize the execution of the State budget and the Government's strategic goals. He recalled that a procedure is currently underway to appoint a new composition of the Counter-Corruption Commission—an essential requirement linked to disbursements of funds under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

According to Pargov, the statement made Saturday morning by the leader of MRF – New Beginning has placed the Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria coalition in a political checkmate, as statements from coalition representatives later in the day revealed conflicting views on the issue.

Pargov noted that the BSP leadership is discussing the question of the Counter-Corruption Commission on Sundaybut clarified that he is expressing his personal opinion at this point.

“Regardless of whether I like it in its current form or whether it’s functioning effectively, the procedure for renewing the Commission’s membership is necessary,” Pargov stated, stressing that it is tied to a massive EUR 5 billion in funding under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

A political standoff emerged in Bulgaria on Saturday over the future of theCounter-Corruption Commission, as top leaders clashed over whether to reform or abolish the body—an institution central to Bulgaria’s commitments under the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Plan.
