Speaking on bTV on Sunday, Democratic Bulgaria co-chairperson Atanas Atanasov said that the topic of the no-confidence motion that Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) plan to table in September has yet to be decided on.

“We will talk with our partners to determine which topic is the most important,” Atanasov said, adding that he supports the ideas proposed by CC leader Assen Vassilev on Saturday.

Following a meeting of CC’s National Council a day earlier, Vassilev said that they will propose to DB three topics for the no-confidence motion: healthcare, prices and incomes, and regional policy and demography.

Commenting on recent actions by the counter-corruption commission in Sofia and Varna, Atanasov said he believe “there is a parallel centre of power - different from that of the government – where such operations are being planned.” He called the situation “a special political operation aimed at eliminating the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria group.”

Atanasov also drew a connection between the timing of the actions and a recently held roundtable discussion on the upcoming presidential elections. “That roundtable triggered the attack. They are worried a strong opponent might emerge in the presidential elections, someone who could change the country’s governance model.”

He described the recent investigation into a liquefied natural gas contract with Turkiye’s BOTAS as “a deceptive maneuver.”
