Protesters gathered in the streets near the European Commission and Parliament building in Sofia on Thursday to demand the preservation of the Bulgarian lev. The event organized by the Awakeners civic initiative restricted traffic in the area.

The protesters chanted “No to the euro” and “Mafia out”. They urged the police officers present to stop protecting the “murderers” and to join the protest by entering the National Assembly building and arresting everyone inside.

The organizers said that a similar protest would take place in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.
