High school graduates achieved an average score of 57.53 out of 100 in the compulsory state matriculation exam in Bulgarian Language and Literature in 2025, which shows above basic level of understanding, Evgeniya Kostadinova, head of the Content of Preschool and School Education Directorate at the Ministry of Education and Science, told a press conference on Wednesday. An analysis of the results of the state matriculation exams of May and June was presented to journalists.

Kostadinova said 79 state matriculation exams were held in various subjects, including numerous foreign languages. "The results achieved in other subjects cannot be compared as absolute values because they depend on how many students sat for them," she added.

The class of 2024 achieved an average score of 58.48 out of 100 in the matriculation exam in Bulgarian Language and Literature, the highest since the matriculation exam was first introduced in 2008.

The number of high school graduates who chose mathematics as their second compulsory state matriculation exam was close to last year's, Kostadinova said.

“The scores are higher in physics and astronomy, history and civilization, information technology, and music. But very few high school graduates sit for a matriculation exam in physics and astronomy, and the Education Ministry cannot talk about an outstanding improvement in this subject,” she explained.
