The Sofia City Court (SCC) has received a request from MRF – New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski to officially register the resignation of Dzhevdet Chakarov as chair of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) in the Register of Political Parties, the court said on Friday.

The request will be reviewed once the case is returned from the Supreme Court of Cassation. The legal case had reached the highest court after an appeal was lodged by Chakarov against the decision of the Sofia City Court to refuse to enter changes to the account of the MRF political party in the Register of Political Parties, to delete Delyan Peevski as chair.

Hours after the May 27 hearing, Chakarov submitted his resignation as MRF chair and left the Democracy, Rights and Freedoms (DRF) parliamentary group, with Hayri Sadakov subsequently elected as the new DRF floor leader.

Peevski and Chakarov were the two chairpersons of the MRF before it split in July 2024 into two factions: Democracy, Rights and Freedoms (DRF), loyal to Ahmed Dogan, and MRF-New Beginning, headed by Dogan’s one-time protege Delyan Peevski. Both factions claim they are the genuine party. Peevski and his supporters were expelled from the MRF in August 2024. Peevski dismissed the decision as "contrary to the Statute". In turn, Peevski's faction expelled Dogan and his faithful from the party in November 2024. The right to use the name and abbreviation of the party is subject to pending litigation.
