Bulgaria is the only European country whose national anthem honours its own alphabet, Vice-President Iliana Iotova said on Monday at celebrations marking 190 years of education in Yakoruda. The ceremony was held at Sts Cyril and Methodius Secondary School.
Iotova recalled the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius and of Prince Boris I, who forged a “spiritual empire” that made Bulgaria a cultural beacon for the Slavic world.
She paid tribute to Father Stoyko Grashkin, founder of Yakoruda’s first school in 1835, and noted that the institution has not only survived for nearly two centuries but has produced scholars, public figures and cultural leaders who bring recognition to Bulgaria worldwide.
“The role of teachers is not easy – you do not simply educate children; you guide them through the world of good and evil and help them become good citizens and people. I bow to your efforts,” Iotova said, adding that her own professional path began in a classroom.
Iotova thanked parents, stressing that they and teachers are partners in the “noble mission” of raising the citizens who will build Bulgaria’s future.
“Be proud of your language, your history and your school. It has given you your first letters, your first knowledge and your first dreams,” Iotova told the students, urging them never to forget their roots wherever life may take them.
