Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil Friday congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election. He was speaking to the press on the sides of a celebration of Europe Day in Sofia. "We congratulate the newly elected Pope Leo XIV. I wish him God’s help in his service," said Patriarch Daniil.

“We hope he will have the courage and strength to return to the ancient traditions of the Church," he added.

When asked whether he expects Pope Leo XIV to follow in the footsteps of the late Pope, Patriarch Daniil responded, "We will have to wait and see."
