In 2022, the severe material and social deprivation rate among young people (aged 15-29 years) in the EU was 6.1%, seeing no change from the previous year, Eurostat reported on Friday. Bulgaria recorded the second highest rate with 18.6%, placing the country between Romania with 25.4% and Greece with 14.9%.

The severe material and social deprivation rate was slightly higher among the total population (meaning all people living in private households) with 6.7%, compared to 6.3% in 2021.

Twelve EU Member States registered rates that were lower than 3%: Slovenia, Austria, Luxembourg, Croatia, Poland, Czechia, the Netherlands, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Finland and Sweden 

The severe material and social deprivation rate among the entire Bulgarian population in 2022 was 18.7% compared to 19.1% the previous year.

Higher risk of poverty and social exclusion among the youth

In 2022, the overall at risk of poverty or social exclusion rate for young people aged 15-29 years in the EU was 24.5%, which was 2.9 percentage points higher than the rate for the total population (21.6%).
