Justice Minister Atanas Slavov called on the investigators Saturday for a full and objective investigation of the case of the abused girl from Stara Zagora - an 18-year-old girl suffered multiple injuries to her head, limbs and body on June 26 after her boyfriend caused bodily harm.

"Once again we are witnessing a shocking case of cruelty to a woman who was inhumanely abused by her boyfriend. There are a number of factors that should be taken into account when considering the case - the vulnerability and youth of the victim, the social threat of the perpetrator, the nature and brutality of the crime committed," Slavov wrote on Facebook.

He also noted that representatives of some political parties did not support the full legislative package of prevention measures provided for in the Protection Against Domestic Violence Act, using "populist slogans and instilling fears".

"Gender-based violence must not be met with institutional disengagement and political abuse," the Justice Minister added.

The prosecutor's office filed a charge of medium bodily harm on the case. The regional court ordered for the man to be detained, but after ab appeal the regional court overturned this decision and did not impose a detention order. The reason for this was that the forensic medical examination had shown that the girl had suffered minor bodily harm, not medium bodily harm. In such cases, the law indicates that the victim may bring a private action against the perpetrator, who is not, however, subject to the imposition of a custodial measure. The regional court panel explained that a detention order may be taken by the court against the accused only in the context of a criminal prosecution conducted by the public prosecution.

The Plovdiv Appelate Prosecution Office stated that the prosecutor in charge of the case had given instructions for an additional medical examination to determine the type and nature of the injury caused to the victim. After its completion, he will decide on an adequate detention measure based on the public threat of the committed crime and the qualification of the act.
