Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, the Chairman of the Shalom Organisation of Jews in Bulgaria, Dr. Alexander Oscar, and the ambassadors of the United States, Ukraine, Poland and Germany paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, City Hall said Friday. “The world is once again reminded of the scale of the most heinous crime in the history of mankind, measurable by the bloodiest wars. We commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and remember the lessons of history,” Fandakova said, addressing the assembly, adding that Sofia has repeatedly stood up to evil, to the daily manifestations of human hatred, such as hate speech and intolerance.
Sofia will strongly oppose, as it has done so far, all anti-democratic manifestations and attempts to destroy our ancient tradition of tolerance, the Mayor added.
Fandakova thanked the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria Shalom and the diplomatic missions, with which all together walk the path of defending the values of peace and wisdom.
A film from the Master of Art Film Festival was screened on the occasion of the day. The screening is part of the film week on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust at Odeon cinema. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and 11,343 Jews from the Aegean, Vardar Macedonia and Pirot are remembered.
