Bulgaria's National Railway Infrastructure Company has finalized the selection process for contractors to modernize the Sofia-Pernik-Radomir and Gyueshevo-Republic of North Macedonia border railway sections according to a statement from the company published on its website on Monday. Both projects form part of Corridor VIII, and their implementation is an important step towards renewing the railway network and improving regional connectivity between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea.
DZZD ISPA is the top-ranked bidder for the project "Modernization of the Sofia–Pernik–Radomir railway line, Pernik–Radomir section", with a contract price of BGN 421,283,219 excluding VAT. The investment will fund the modernization of the Pernik–Radomir section, the construction of a double railway line for train speeds of up to 160 km/h, the renovation of track layouts at stations and the complete elimination of level crossings for road and pedestrian traffic. The deadline for completion is mid-2029.
DZZD Gyueshevo 2025 is the highest-ranked candidate for the railway modernization project for the section from Gyushevo to the border with the Republic of North Macedonia, with a contract price of BGN 97,972,691.73 excluding VAT. This includes designing and constructing the remaining 2.4 km of railway line to the border, as well as reconstructing the track layout and reception building at the Gyueshevo railway station. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2028.
