During consultations with BSP - United Left ahead of the procedure to hand out mandates for forming a new government, President Rumen Radev raised key questions about whether the party would seek stability through a new governing coalition or move toward early elections. He also asked whether the Election Code should be reopened, including rules on voting machines and the state budget.
BSP Chair and outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov said that while the party was satisfied with its participation in government from a state perspective, it was not satisfied at the party level. He argued that political immaturity and party egoism had led to a loss of legitimacy for the outgoing government and acknowledged that BSP had suffered political damage from its role in governance.
President Radev described the moment as difficult for BSP due to the simultaneous resignation of the government and of the party’s Executive Bureau, but expressed confidence that the century-old party would overcome the challenges.
The consultations are part of the constitutional process following the government’s resignation, as the president meets with all parliamentary groups before assigning mandates to form a new cabinet.
On Tuesday, the President discussed the political situation in the country with representatives of Vazrazhdane and of MRF – New Beginning. On Monday (15 December), consultations with President Rumen Radev began, during which he met with GERB-UDF and Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria.
A consultation is also scheduled with the There Is Such a People party later on Wednesday.
