Istanbul continues to experience aftershocks from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake near Silivri on April 23, causing minor damage to about 2,000 buildings and injuring nearly 150 people.
A new magnitude 4 earthquake was recorded in the Marmara region, which includes the 16-million-strong metropolis of Istanbul at 11:36 am on Saturday, today, the Kandilli Observatory And Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul reported.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the village of Marmara Ereglisi, Tekirdag district, on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, and was 18 km deep.
The earthquake was felt more noticeably in the European part of Istanbul, which is in the direction of the epicenter, and less so in the Asian part of the metropolis, Turkish media reported. It was also felt in neighbouring districts.
Turkish seismologist Ahmet Ercan, in a comment to Portal Haberler, said that Saturday’s quake was a secondary one of the main earthquake of 6.2 on April 23.
"Everything is normal, there is no need to run," the seismologist said.
After the earthquake on April 23, which was also felt in Bulgaria, there have been over 450 secondary quakes, two of which were of magnitude 5 and 5.9, theKandilli Observatory reported.
