One more person has been found dead after flooding in central Greece this week, which brings the death toll from the disaster to 12, Greek media reported.

The latest victim is a 77-year-old man whose body was discovered all the way on the island of Euboea. He had disappeared in the floods from a beach near Volos.

Five people are missing at the moment, according to the Ministry of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis.

Since Friday, the Thessaloniki-Athens highway has been closed again in the area of the town of Larissa, where the River Peneus overflowed. New evacuations are reported in the city, although the authorities reported a 40 cm drop in the water level on Friday.

The waters of Lake Karla near Volos have also been rising dangerously since last night, with large areas of south-eastern Thessaly also flooded as a result. Two villages in the area have been put on alert for possible evacuation. The Greek General Staff said helicopters based at the nearby Stefanovikeio base were safe.

A number of villages in Thessaly have been evacuated, but many people still remain stranded in flooded settlements. Between September 7 and 9, 767 people have been air rescued and food, water, medicine and blankets are being airlifted to many locations. In total, 3,443 people have been removed from flooded areas by rescue teams.
