On Wednesday I will nominate Andrey Gyurov and Petar Chobanov as deputy governors of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), said BNB Governor Dimitar Radev at a briefing in Parliament on Tuesday after the National Assembly re-elected him to the post.

"One of the most important conditions I set when I accepted to be nominated as governor was that the leadership of the BNB should be elected with broad political support. Broad political support is a strong factor for the independence of the central bank," he said.

In his words, the vote showed that support was broad enough by any standards and he expressed his expectations of a similar approach with regard to the sub-governors. Radev clarified that the two deputy governor nominations were actually the result of a process. He added that this approach was a precondition set by himself. "The aim was to reach the intersection between the expert approach, which is my approach, and the political approach, which is obviously the approach of those who vote for the nominations", Radev explained. He stressed that of the several names that were consulted, two of the candidates received broad enough support or indications of broad enough support.

Radev also pointed out that the current law clearly defines what the deputy governors are responsible for - one will be in charge of the Issuance Department, the other in charge of the Banking Department. He said that there will inevitably be organizational and personal changes on the way to the eurozone, but this is a process. "There will not be any particular dramas", he assured.

In terms of plans, we are going full speed ahead to do what I have said several times that we should do - technical preparations, legislation, Radev said, specifying that the goal is to have the full package of BNB-related legislative changes in the National Assembly in September.

According to him, how the referendum on preserving the Bulgarian lev will be handled is a political issue.
