President Plevneliev Meets Representatives
of US Jewish Organisations
in New York

New York, September 24 (BTA) - Expressions of xenophobia and
anti-semitism in Europe cannot be tolerated and should be
stigmatized by institutions and civic society, President Rosen
Plevneliev said in New York, as reported by the presidential
information service Wednesday. He was speaking to journalists
after emerging from a meeting with representatives of Jewish
organisations in the United States. Participants in the meeting
included representatives of the Anti-Defamation League, B'nai
B'rith International, the American Jewish Committee, and the
World Jewish Congress, among others.

Plevneliev underscored that it is inadmissible for political
parties in EU member-states to use hate speech and extreme
nationalist rhetoric.

The friendship between the Bulgarian and the Jewish people was
built by remarkable people like Dimiter Peshev, Bulgarian MPs
and the metropolitans Stephen and Cyril, who saved the Jewish
community in Bulgaria in 1943, the Bulgarian President noted. He
also pointed out that Bulgaria will continue to encourage
Israeli companies to invest in high-tech, food production and
tourism in the country.

The investigation of the terrorist attack in Bourgas, in which
five Israeli and one Bulgarian citizen died, was also discussed
in the course of the meeting. "We saw that terrorism does not
have borders and can hit any state," Plevneliev said. He
affirmed that Bulgaria will work for closer integration with
democratic countries and for exchange of information to prevent
such acts of violence in the future./PK/BR
