European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union must significantly increase its domestic energy production, including nuclear energy, following discussions on the consequences of the crisis in the Middle East.
She stressed that long-term solutions require greater electrification and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. According to her, since the start of strikes against Iran, the EU has spent an additional EUR 22 billion on imported fossil fuels.
Von der Leyen warned that even if hostilities were to end soon, their economic impact would persist for a long time. She called for reduced fuel consumption and highlighted ongoing EU measures aimed at curbing rising energy prices.
She also urged closer coordination among EU member states regarding natural gas storage levels and the use of oil reserves, and said she expects temporary measures allowing more flexible state aid rules for energy-affected sectors to be approved by the end of the month.
Regarding geopolitical tensions, she said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would cause major economic damage while negotiations remain stalled. She added that any future agreement must address concerns over Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes as well as ensure freedom of navigation. She also warned that escalating conflict in Lebanon risks undermining broader regional stability efforts.
