A kilo of cocaine and 5.8 kg of marijuana were discovered by Bulgarian customs officers at Danube Bridge 2 Vidin–Calafat on April 14 during an inspection of a truck transporting fruit. The drugs had been hidden in various cavities in the driver's cab of the Turkish-registered truck, which crossed the border from Romania into Bulgaria on its way from the Netherlands to Turkiye, the Sofia Appellate Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday.
Pretrial proceedings were initiated under the Criminal Code, under the supervision of the Vidin District Prosecutor's Office. The Turkish driver was charged with trafficking high-risk narcotic substances across the Bulgarian border.
He was detained for up to 72 hours. A request will be submitted to a court for the imposition of a pretrial detention measure.
